Project Action Foundation & Children at Risk
Local Martial Arts School and Midland Police Dept. join forces to get kids at risk off the street and into a disciplined activity.
3/8/2000 -- Midland Texas: Detective Porter of the Midland Police Department and Ta Ch'u Academy of the Martial Arts are working together with a non-profit organization called Project Action Foundation to give local youths (ages 4-18) options for activities; in this case, martial arts training.
Detective Porter will recommend a student for the training based on 'child at risk' criteria and submit a request for scholarship funding to Ta Ch'u Academy. Ta Ch'u Academy forwards the request for funding along with it's recommendations. Project Action Foundation reviews the application and will the provide the funding for the students at risk. In return, Ta Ch'u Academy will provide quarterly reports to Project Action Foundation on each student accepted, outlining the academic and personal achievements (or lack thereof). After the review, Project Action Foundation will provide another three months funding for students meeting the minimum (or above) requirements.
Local businesses are also getting on board; Recognizing the need for wholesome activities that promote responsible growth in our children, ARCO Permian has donated $1,000.00 dollars toward the project. Home Depot has donated hundreds of dollars of wood to be used for the BREAK-A-THON. Also involved is a long time neighborhood convenience store, Bowen's Grocery on Thomason Drive in Midland. Bowen's donated $250.00 to the program and is providing the catering service during the Project Action BREAK-A-THON on March 25th, held at Ta Ch'u Academy of the Martial Arts, 3402 Thomason Drive, Midland.
The general public is invited to the BREAK-A-THON activity and ALL SOUTHWEST MARTIAL ARTS TOURNAMENT on March 25th from 10am until 8pm. Tickets ($10) may be purchased at Ta Ch'u Academy (699-7779), Bowen's Grocery (3400 Thomason Drive) or at KQRX 95FM.
